Germany is the biggest market worldwide followed by France which is less than one third of the German market in size. The USA rank third [1] before the Netherlands, Japan, the UK, Austria, and Switzerland.

[1] In the US legal protection exists as ‘prepaid legal services’ or ‘legal plans’ which are not set up as insurances. The main differences are that legal plans cover specific anticipated events, like drafting a will, while legal protection insurance covers unforeseen events (e.g. employment disputes or criminal charges). Therefore, legal plans rely mainly on bulk saving (for instance mass purchases of legal services or in-house counsel for a specified group of people, e.g. trade union members) rather than insurance principles, i.e. they do not include guarantees like insurers but provide cover only until the accumulated funds are used up.

Notes: premiums for Norway, South Africa (2015 and 2016) are estimates; for the UK only income of RIAD members is included (approx. 80% of the total market); the Spanish market is underestimated since most multi-branch companies do not report premium income from legal protection separately
